Recent purchases!

I don't really know why I'm posting this but I'm just excited.

If you can't tell, I'm a sucker for wood print. I need to buy extras of those sunglasses since I'm horrible at protecting them. Let's hope these ones last a while...knock on wood. Haha, get it? You will eventually. Anyway I have this crazy idea of this line I want to make someday influenced mainly by wood. The Wooden World? Something like that.

Also, HAPPY NEW YEAR! Be safe!

The Generic Man A/W '08

Basically, these are sick and I want them. I don't know what the quality is and if they have a good price-to-quality ratio but how sick would it be to have a bunch of these in different colors just chillin' on your closet floor?

I kind of really want these because I just want a pair of chelsea boots and, even though they're side-zip, I still think they'd suffice for a while.

Generic Surplus

So apparently Generic Surplus is a cheaper subdivision of LA-based company The Generic Man. Since I can't afford the heavy price tags of Common Projects, I'm thinking these would be my replacement. I don't like having a bunch of branding on my shoes...I prefer them clean, simple, and comfortable (Vans Authentics HOLLA!). Generic Surplus looks like they'e got all three covered.

Anyway, chances are I'll be grabbing a pair of those black military high tops if they ever go on sale at URBN. I hardly ever pay retail for anything.

Plimsolls in Navy, I don't know, I'm not really digging that tiny little captoe thing they've got going on. Otherwise they look like a sturdier version of Keds for like triple the price.

Common Projects.

All I can say is that I need these in my life so someone give me $300 for a pair.

Burberry S/S '09 "Crumpled Classics"

The British fashion house doesn't disappoint with this collection. The designer, Christopher Bailey, proves that there actually is masculinity in low-cut scoop neck shirts. I love the way everything fits on the models...the tops drape enough to flow with the spring air and the pants fit just right. They aren't too tight or too loose. Oh, and the shoes just work really well with everything. I love the idea of layers and jackets for spring...it just gives me hope that spring in Southern California will still be cold enough to wear outfits like these. The colors also work really well with each other. They could use some little bright accents like a yellow belt or something here and there but I don't think it's mandatory. The only thing I'd change, though, is the hats. I'd either replace them with oversized beanies or flowy hair.

April 77 Holiday '08

For those that don't know, April 77 is a French clothing brand (as well as a record label now) that is heavily rooted in punk rock. Their clothes obviously reflect the rock influences, but they also retain an element of luxe. The price range is definitely not for street punks, but if you've got that inner rocker in you then you should check these out.

Here are some pictures (all borrowed from Revolve):

The Costello in Grey. I love the way these fit...they're like the perfect fit as far as work/dress pants are concerned.
I'd love to snag a pair in Grey and another in Black. I've been looking for a pant that fits like this for a while now but I can't justify the $165 or so price tag.

Photobucket
The Decontrol. Such a sick jacket. I think they have a whole vegan anti-leather thing going on, which is not surprising since its a punk influenced brand, so this jacket is made of waxed cotton. If you don't know the idea behind waxed cotton, I'll make a separate post on it later.

The Joey Overdrive in Raw. I love the way they fit in the full picture. They're probably sized up one or two because usually April 77 jeans fit skin tight. Now I know they're raw, but April 77 raws aren't really known for their fading properties because I guess the denim is too thin or something. Anyway, these are 16" at the knee and taper down to 14" at the hem so they're pretty skinny.

Melissa Haslam

To break the French artist spree, here's a talented Australian artist named Melissa Haslam. I love the colors and the dark, enchanting, and even playful environments she places her subjects in.

Band of Outsiders A/W '08

I know this is old news but I don't care because I want it on my blog. So, apparently, Scott Sternberg traveled to Scotland to search for an old company called Glenmac and also found the roots of tartan. Anyway, as usual, click the pictures for the full story.

Those Sperry boots look interesting. I still don't know how I feel about them, though. I'd probably have to try them on in person to make a final judgment but all I can say is that they have potential. I'm also really digging that brown velvety/cord-looking suit at the end but minus the gloves.

-M.

EDIT!
More on the Sperry colab here:

Band of Outsiders S/S '09

I'm not really digging this collection as much as S/S '08, but the shirts still look like they retain their slim Body A shape. I don't know, maybe it's just the way they're put together on the models or something. It still looks wearable, though...but as separate pieces. At least Sperry is still involved. Click the pictures for the full story.

(^Probably my favorite look out of the collection minus the hat and maybe the tie).

P.S. I do realize that I haven't posted the BoO collections in chronological order, but I don't really care. I'm too lazy to fix it. =)

Hipster subculture: a dead end?

Read these two articles about the hipster "subculture" and tell me what you think.

"The Very Last Thing You'll Ever Need to Read About Hipsters"

"Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civiliazation"

Funny how both articles are quick to mention American Apparel.

I don't know about you man, but I think they kind of took things a little far calling it "the end of Western Civilzation" and "suicidal".

I don't know what it is about French artists lately,

but I'm really diggin' what they're makin'.

Check out Julien Canavezes. He does illustrations as well as animations. It's a Flash-heavy site, though. Just thought I'd warn you.

Cold Weather Comfort

Being stuck inside while California enjoys a snowstorm is no fun at all. To keep my sanity I'm going to list a bunch of stuff that is keeping me company.

You can't go wrong with this movie. It' has become my yearly tradition to watch this movie at least once before Christmas.

---

City & Colour - "Bring Me Your Love"

For some reason, Mr. Dallas Green's solo act has always been cold weather music for me. I don't know why, but it just seems more fitting. Anyway this album does not disappoint any fans of this man's amazing voice. If you don't have it, I suggest you go buy it as soon as you finish reading this post.

Tracks to check out:
"Sleeping Sickness"
"What Makes a Man"
"Waiting"
"The Girl"

---

Owl City - "Maybe I'm Dreaming"

If you're not a fan of chirptunes then don't bother. Owl City, a.k.a. Adam Young, makes you want to dance with every single note. I'm not sure why this falls under the cold weather category but it also seems just as fitting as City & Colour. Anyway, this album is best enjoyed with friends and hot chocolate. Trust me you'll want to go out and dance in the snow. I know I do. It's so tempting while watching it fall endlessly outside my window.

Tracks to check out:
"Dear Vienna"
"The Saltwater Room"
"The Technicolor Phase"

---
Stuff I didn't feel like finding images for:

  • Chicken noodle soup - you can never go wrong with this classic.
  • Futurama, Heroes, and Family Guy - never a bad choice. Whoever invented season box sets deserves a high five.
  • Hot chocolate - I prefer mine with soy milk.
  • Nubi! - my lil' baby bunny. I'd let her run around in the snow but then I wouldn't be able to catch her and bring her in so she's stuck in the laundry room chewing on wicker stuff.
Anyway, I'm sure I'll be posting more soon since I can't sleep. Oh and I'm at the point where my eyes are swelling up. Haha. Seven more days until I get these stitches out!

While I'm recovering from surgery, here's an awesome artist.

She's a French artist named Adolie Day. I stumbled upon her work this morning while waiting to go in for surgery and fell in love with it. I'd really love to hang some of these on my walls.
